Color: Analogous Design

bouquets design Feb 01, 2024

The base of this Biergarten bouquet includes mauvey bronze, golden copper and delicate ivory making this bouquet worthy of winning over your heart. Mauvey centers transition to a gorgeous bronze thanks to the reliably stunning ‘Cornel Bronze’ dahlia (1). Golden coppery hues from ‘Hot Biscuits’ amaranth (2) enhance the richness of this bouquet. And finally ‘Oklahoma Ivory’ zinnia (3) steals the show with her soft glow.

But you may be wondering, why does it work so well together?

I would describe this color palette as analogous, meaning these colors fall together, one after the other, on the color wheel. This palette starts with the darkest hue or color, which is bronze, transitions to a copper hue and finally lightens up with pale ivory.

I would describe ivory as a very pale yellow. Copper an orangish hue and Bronze just tipping the scales from an orange to a reddish brown hue. Essentially this color palette includes hues or colors that are ROY (red, orange, yellow) colors!

Red-Orange-Yellow = Analogous

To give you another relatable example, a hair color expert or colorist might describe this color palette as balayage or ombre.

Ok, Ill admit it, another bonus reason this palette works so well together is the addition of the silvery blue-green eucalyptus. This blue-green color is directly opposite our original analogous color palette on the color wheel. Which means these colors are complimentary colors.

Complementary colors make each other pop and stand out when used together. Imagine a clear fall day when the orange leaves of a Sugar Maple contrast vividly against a blue sky. It’s a brilliant contrast right? Well, now you understand why, complementary colors for the win!

Many of the colors in the Biergarten bouquet included orangish-red hues, which makes blue-green a fantastic compliment.

If you follow our bouquets on Instagram, you’ll probably notice I try to incorporate as much blue and blue-green into our bouquet as possible. Eucalyptus season (September and October here in SE WI) is one of the highlights of the season for me. I LOVE the way it compliments fall colors so effortlessly.
