If you are new to designing with flowers the entire process can seem overwhelming and intimidating. However, it doesn't have to be! In the course we'll ease you into the design process.

First you'll learn about the 5 flower types, then you'll focus on building bouquets by using just 3 design elements: color, texture and balance.

Outlined in the image below are the 5 flower types that make a complete bouquet.

Next we'll go over the 3 design elements: color, texture and balance.

COLOR

There are endless ways to create gorgeous color combinations, but it does help if you know some color theory basics.

  • Color Harmonies
    • Monochromatic - use of one color such as orange or purple
    • Complimentary - use of colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel such as yellow and purple, blue and orange
    • Analogous - colors that are side by side on the color wheel such as red, orange and yellow or orange, yellow and green
  • Warm and Cool Colors
    • Warm colors are red, orange and yellow on the color wheel
    • Cool colors are green, blue and purple on the color wheel
  • Shades, Tints and Tones
    • A shade is created by adding black to a color, making it darker and more dramatic
    • A tint is created by adding white to a color, making it lighter, airier and softer
    • Tone is created by adding gray to a color, making it subtler

TEXTURE

All flowers have tactile texture. There is an entire spectrum of texture from smooth and silky to fuzzy and feathery. When composing a bouquet or arrangement, consider how the flowers' textures look in relation to each other.

BALANCE

There are generally 2 types of balance:

  • Asymmetrical - stability of the design favors, or is heavier on one side vs the other.
  • Symmetrical - stability of the design does not favor one side or the other. Bouquet is balanced from right to left, front to back.

Implementing these design elements gets easier with practice, trust me.
